This significantly challenges a majority of coffee producers who find themselves ensnared in a commodity trap, leaving them with limited influence over coffee prices. In addition, most of the profits generated often end up in the pockets of cafes and retail stores rather than benefiting the farmers themselves.
Recognizing this challenge, Ashley Prentice, a third-generation coffee farmer from Guatemala with over 13 years of experience in the industry, identified the need for a company that could serve as a platform connecting farmers directly to the market. Her goal was to empower farming families, increase their profits, and contribute to retaining more income within the coffeeproducing countries. She formed Gento Coffee Roasters in the heart of Guatemala’s coffee-rich landscapes. In addition, a custom blend was developed for the cafe, known as their house coffee, which encapsulates the desired Guatemalan flavors and serves as a base espresso for milk beverages. The blend is delivered with customized packaging and branding. The collaboration resulted in a successful outcome, as the differentiated menu significantly boosted coffee sales year after year, demonstrating the effectiveness of the partnership in enhancing the cafe’s offerings and customer engagement.
A key factor contributing to this success is the team’s distinct strength, where each member brings specialized expertise in different facets of the coffee industry. The individuals, whether initially rooted in a coffee background or not, have evolved into comprehensive coffee experts due to the proximity to the origin and engagement with producers.
