Hawaii paints a vivid picture of sun-kissed beaches, mesmerizing skies, and the soulful strumming of ukuleles. In recent years, it has become known for another exciting element brewing beneath its palm trees––rich, aromatic coffee. Dedicated Hawaiian coffee roasters are turning this tropical paradise into the dream destination for coffee lovers.
Infusing the vibrant coffee culture on the island of Maui, Hawaii, Akamai Coffee Co. is captivating the attention of visitors, as well as local patrons, with its exquisite blends and exceptional customer service.
From the moment one walks into their trendy cafés, they can feel the Aloha Spirit. The warm and welcoming ambiance and fun vibe make it the perfect place to kickstart one’s day while enjoying the beautiful ocean views, a reason Akamai Coffee is often the highlight of visitors’ vacations.
When power couple Kimberly and Byron Brown founded Akamai as the first drive-through coffee shop in Hawaii, Maui was yet to experience true coffee culture. They decided to change that narrative with a clear goal in mind; bringing exceptional specialty coffee to the island of Maui, complemented by excellence in customer service.
“We specialize in crafting high-quality coffee, brewed using the best equipment and served with a distinct customer experience,” says Byron Brown, co-owner and head of operations at Akamai Coffee Co.
Customers can taste the high-end Akamai homegrown brews at three locations, Wailea, Kihei, and Kahului, Wailea being its flagship café.
Perfecting the Art of Roasting
Delivering the essence of specialty coffees requires an understanding of the intricacies of each blend. Coffee connoisseurs Kimberly and Byron knew that to create a distinct brand identity, they needed to identify beans that offered the best flavor profile. After years of trial and error, the duo began roasting the beans themselves to create signature blends.
The 100 percent Maui-grown coffee, along with single origins that are selected from various countries like Mexico and Colombia, offers distinct flavor profiles that make Akamai coffee stand out. Byron and his team work directly with the farmers to handpick the beans. The extra effort taken to visit the remote growing sites is evident in the satisfaction experienced by customers with every sip of coffee.
Coffee beans are roasted at its headquarters to maintain freshness in every brew. The facility also houses a training and testing lab for stringent quality control. Each batch of coffee undergoes rigorous testing before making it to the shelf or a customer’s cup.
Other cafés are in the habit of serving a different type of coffee every week, forcing customers to select a blend they may not prefer. That is not the case for Akamai’s customers, who enjoy the same level of consistency in every cup of coffee. Visitors from any part of the world can also relive the experience by placing online orders for the company’s signature blends.
Specialty Coffee That Hits All the Right Notes
Akamai’s reputation as one of the best destinations for coffee aficionados is the result of an elaborate process developed with attention to detail. From best-in-class equipment to water filtered to perfection and highly trained baristas, every step in the process is held to the highest standards to ensure that Akamai is not just a place where consumers walk in to grab a cup of coffee; it is a vibrant cafe that keeps customers coming back for more.
Integrated espresso machines can be monitored using an app. Any change in water temperature or shot times can be identified using the application and promptly rectified to ensure the quality of the product remains unblemished.
Along with its signature blends, Akamai’s team explains every aspect associated with making the coffee, from water temperature and quality to grind size and brewing method. Its highly trained baristas ensure that customers enjoy the Akamai flavor in every cup, even while brewing a cup at home.
Passion For Specialty Coffee Education
Enriching Maui’s coffee culture through extensive investments in educating employees has been key to Akamai’s success over the years. Employees learn about specialty coffee and equipment and help customers understand what differentiates Akamai’s coffee from the rest. Some of its baristas ensure that the education system is implemented and followed to the letter.
Efforts have also been made to educate the local community on the different varieties of coffee and their intricacies. By offering cupping courses to the local public, it helps them not only understand and appreciate the product but also the story behind each handpicked coffee bean.
For instance, some of the drinks served are less sweet in comparison to what consumers are used to. To an educated customer base, this represents the higher quality of coffee and brewing that emphasizes bolder flavors.
We Don’t Want To Be A Novelty Coffee Shop That Just Serves Basic Coffee. We Want To Be At The Top Of The Heap On A Global Scale That Can Compete At The Highest Level
“We encourage our employees to volunteer at these events because we want them to not only contribute to the coffee culture but also gain something from it,” says Kimberly Brown, co-owner of Akamai Coffee Co.
Kimberly and Byron also conduct lectures on customer service and coffee roasting. This approach to educating its peers and gaining knowledge from them has helped Akamai push the boundaries of coffee and stay relevant and ahead of the industry.
“We don’t want to be a novelty coffee shop that just serves basic coffee. We want to be at the top of the heap on a global scale that can compete at the highest level,” says Byron.
Excellence at Every Step
Akamai exerts its influence on other coffee brands, restaurants, and hotels to deliver an incredible experience. Restaurants often bring their staff to the cafe to learn how the Akamai team engages with customers and delivers an experience that others wish to match.
In one instance, a team of executives from Four Seasons approached Akamai to understand why their customers preferred to visit the café instead of their hotel coffee shops. Just by walking into the café, they understood what made Akamai different. The combination of phenomenal coffee, superior customer service, and a refreshing experience was key to customer retention.
Recently, Akamai was named the number one coffee roaster in Maui based on a vote conducted within the community. Three years ago, Maui Magazine added a category for coffee companies in the prestigious Aipono Awards, and Akamai has secured its position at the top of the list.
Supply Chain Barriers? Not for Akamai
Over the last few years, the distribution and supply chain has evolved significantly, presenting new challenges at every step. Regardless, Akamai strives to deliver a seamless front-end experience.
The team’s problem-solving approach and ability to work under pressure have been key to pivoting in the right direction when required and maintaining successful operations.
In the coming months, Akamai aims to expand its operations into the wholesale coffee sector and partner with private companies, restaurants, and hotels. It is also on track to venture into newer markets like Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, bringing its coffee culture to the mainland U.S.
The Browns are the masterminds behind Akamai’s fame and the keepers of its renowned quality. By dedicating their time and effort to maintaining superior quality in every cup, they continue to lead Akamai on its path to exponential growth.
Crafting delectable blends that coffee lovers crave, the Hawaiian roasters are making quite the impression and expanding toward a grand scale. Akamai is setting a trend, creating a buzz, and shaping a coffee experience that one will relive with every cup.
